Scenography for Alida Dors’ choreography at Theater Rotterdam Schouwburg, Netherlands. Premiere November 11th, 2022.

๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ช โ€“Surinamese word for “permission”โ€“ plunges into the least navigated depths of love, desire, compassion and connection. Rather than taking love as a given, ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ช explores its feared sides, unveiling contradictions, memories, raw sensuality and prejudice.

The stage is structure, dreamscape, tool and punctuation, to be inhabited and deconstructed. Twenty two ropes hang from the ceiling, defining space, creating paths, while essentially being a void.

“Can we give in to our desire to give and receive love? How can we allow ourselves to feel compassion and connection? How can we forgive our enemies – the enemy outside, as well as those inside ourselves?” In ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ช director, playwright and choreographer Alida Dors has asked each of the performers to explore their female energy. Dors dissected love in an intimate way and let the sweet water flow. As a result we experience love as a ritual of cleansing and rebirth. “The pile of clothing that is peeled off in layers illustrates how the dancers get rid of imposed patterns and habits. Back to themselves, they all get a chance to break out of the jungle of yellow ropes and let loose in their familiar dance style.”

Annette Embrechts, de Volkskrant 13/11/2022
